Set in a dystopian United States where the West is the "Republic" at war with its neighbors, "Legend" by Marie Lu is an action-packed tale that keeps you reading!  I loved how the story switched perspectives from fifteen-year-old Day (a wanted criminal living in the slums) to fifteen-year-old June (a military detective).  They are supposed to be enemies.  And they are ... that is until they meet each other and are forced to reassess their notions of this dystopian world and the people in it.

By Patricia McCormick

Told in powerful vignettes, Sold by Patricia McCormick is a haunting tale of a girl from Nepal who thought she was going to be a maid, but instead finds that she ahs been sold into child prostitution.  Though the topic is quite heavy, through the voice of 13-year-old Lakshmi your eyes will be opened to the reality of modern-day slavery.  An important and enthralling read.

Join Miranda as she retells a year of life in New York City - life at school, working at a sandwich shop and at home with her family.  This is a tale of friendships, of mystery and even some magic.  Its Newbery Medal was well-deserved for this clever read was filled with surprises!

"I have some advice. I may sound crazy, but here goes.....

At some point, you're going to have to read Shakespeare, Dickens, Hemingway or Twain.  And while you're defining vocabulary words, filling in worksheets and writing essays about various symbolic interpretations, you might be forgetting something.  That is to read for the pleasure of it!  That's right - I said read to enjoy classic literature.  All you really might care about is that upcoming test, but these works were written to entertain.  The characters want you to join them - they want you to laugh with them and cry with them.  They want you to use the words on the page as a portal to enter their three-dimensional world and be there next to them throughout their journeys.  Don't let you analysis crush the magic of literature or your love of reading."

A Message from the Furniture

Hi there!  I'm Otto the Ottoman and wow do I have something to tell YOU!  For years I was locked up in the Auburn Public Library's garage, when all of a sudden...whoosh...I was dragged outside and tossed into a dumpster.  Me, Otto, trash??  But luckily, I was rescued - rescued from the depths of the dumpster by my dumpster-diving hero, Miss Renee, the youth services librarian!  After being pampered with a thorough cleaning solution scrub-down (massage-style, of course), I am now a proud part of the new furniture in the young adult section of the Auburn Library!  Now I really hope you'll come visit me.  All those years in the garage were lonely and now I get to see people and books and...it's all so exciting! So please come on down.  I am your chair, I am your table and I am your footrest.  So grab a book, put your feet up (on me!) and get comfortable at the Auburn Library!
